San Diego Ranks as Big City Where Residents Spend More on Housing

5/19/20

Housing costs are the largest expense for the average American family and can be particularly burdensome for residents in major U.S. cities where the cost of living tends to be higher.

In a new study, SmartAsset analyzed data on the 50 most-populated U.S. cities to find where residents spend the most on housing. We considered two metrics: median monthly housing costs and housing costs as a percentage of income.

Out of the 50 most-populous U.S. cities, San Diego ranks in the 3rd spot in SmartAsset’s study on where people spend the most on housing. Median monthly housing costs ($1,811) make up 27.29% of local household income.
